Different ways to become an Irish citizen based on your personal circumstances.

Citizenship by Naturalization

The most common route for non-Irish nationals who have been legally resident in Ireland.

Key Requirements:

  • •Including 1 year of continuous residence immediately before applying
  • •"Good character" (no serious criminal record)
  • •Intention to continue living in Ireland
  • •Make a declaration of fidelity and loyalty

Citizenship by Irish Descent

If you have Irish ancestry, you may qualify for Irish citizenship without a residence requirement.

Who Qualifies:

  • •
    Irish-born parent:

You are automatically an Irish citizen if one of your parents was born in Ireland.

  • •
    Irish-born grandparent:

You can apply to be added to the Foreign Births Register if one of your grandparents was born in Ireland.

  • •
    Irish-born great-grandparent:

You may qualify if one of your parents is already registered on the Foreign Births Register (even if they never claimed Irish citizenship).

Foreign Births Registration:

Process can take 12-18 months. Apply through the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Other Pathways

Citizenship by Marriage

Marriage to an Irish citizen does not automatically grant citizenship, but the residency requirement may be reduced to 3 years.

Citizenship by Birth

Children born in Ireland are automatically citizens if:

  • At least one parent is an Irish citizen
  • At least one parent has been legally resident for 3+ years
  • The child was born before January 1, 2005 (different rules apply)

Refugee Status

Recognized refugees can apply after 3 years of residency.

Honorary Citizenship

Rarely granted by the government for exceptional circumstances or contributions to Ireland.

Ireland allows dual citizenship. However, your home country may have restrictions, so check your current country's rules.

Citizenship Ceremony

The final step in becoming an Irish citizen.

Irish citizenship ceremonies were introduced in 2011 to mark the importance of acquiring Irish citizenship. Before this, new citizens simply received their certificate by post without any formal recognition.

What to Expect:

  1. 1

Invitation: After your application is approved, you'll receive an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony on a specific date.

  2. 2

Venue: Ceremonies usually take place at large venues such as convention centers or concert halls, with hundreds of new citizens attending at once.

  3. 3

Presiding Officer: A judge or retired judge typically presides, and government ministers often attend.

  4. 4

Declaration: You'll make a declaration of fidelity to the Irish nation and loyalty to the State, speaking the words aloud with fellow new citizens.

  5. 5

Certificate: You'll receive your Certificate of Naturalization, officially making you an Irish citizen.

  6. 6

Celebration: The ceremony typically includes the Irish national anthem and speeches welcoming new citizens.

The Declaration

"I, [name], having applied to the Minister for Justice for a certificate of naturalization, hereby solemnly declare my fidelity to the Irish nation and my loyalty to the State. I undertake to faithfully observe the laws of the State and to respect its democratic values."
